The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng is concerned that effective and appropriate steps were not taken to prevent irregular expenditure amounting to R3 million by G-Fleet.

This information is contained in the annual report of G-Fleet for the 2018/2019 financial year.

The irregular expenditure can be broken down as follows:

Details of Irregular Expenditure Disciplinary steps taken/criminal proceedings Amount
Expired property lease contract Irregular expenditure has been confirmed; investigations are currently underway to determine the liable person in law R1 797 000
Expired cleaning services contract Irregular expenditure has been confirmed; investigations are currently underway to determine the liable person in law R10 000
Expired security contract Irregular expenditure has been confirmed; investigations are currently underway to determine the liable person in law R1 746 000
TOTAL R3 553 000

This irregular expenditure is unacceptable as it indicates that G-fleet does not have a proper financial management system in place to prevent this from happening.

If irregular expenditure continues in this department, it could leave the department open to fraud and corruption.

The DA will be tabling questions to the MEC for Roads and Transport, Jacob Mamabolo, to ascertain what measures are been put in place to prevent irregular expenditure from occurring in the future and by when the investigation into the matter will be finalised.
