Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng successfully passed a motion without notice regarding e-Tolls in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP)
During our motion, we noted that the death of e-Tolls was announced, but its ghost continues to haunt the Gauteng Province, as the turning off of gantries has not yet been gazetted.
The financial model for the replacement of e-Tolls has still not been finalised, and Gauteng committed to debt for which it has no idea how to service.
Gauteng residents will be unfairly prejudiced in having to foot the bill for this unfair project over which they had no say. In addition, service delivery in the province will suffer as a result of scarce funds having to be spent on the repayment of this vanity project.
The DA rejects any new taxes or increases in the current taxes or fees to fund e-Toll debt.
We will continue to monitor the implementation of this motion to ensure that our residents are not once again saddled with an unwanted tax.
