The Democratic Alliance (DA) wishes a speedy recovery to all the injured passengers involved in this evening peak hour train derailment.

The DA calls on the Rail Safety Regulator to investigate the cause of the train derailment at Elandsfontein train today.

In addition, the Rail Safety Regulator must publish the findings of all Metrorail train accidents in Gauteng, which are becoming far too common, and report whether the recommendations have been implemented.

This yet another blight on PRASA and the failing ANC’s ability to effectively manage and maintain train infrastructure which many rely on to access jobs and opportunities.

For far too long, the ANC government has neglected rail safety and the safety of passengers. The Metrorail trains are in a state of disrepair due to a lack of proper consistent maintenance.

The ANC is putting commuters’ lives at risk on a daily basis and is not in a position to provide safe and reliable public transport to the residents of Gauteng.

The only way we can ensure that our rail system is safe is by handing over the day-to-day running of Metrorail to a DA-run Gauteng provincial government.

The DA Gauteng-led government will run Metrorail’s trains far more effectively by ensuring safe and reliable transport for millions of passengers.

In Gauteng, the DA will ensure that there is provincial control of Metrorail and we will upgrade Metrorail to ensure a safe and reliable system for all passengers. We urge Gauteng residents to vote for the DA on the 8 of May 2019 for a safer and reliable train system.
